First time I became aware of him and his cronies, was when the Irish PMs car was being driven into Stormont for a "secret" visit, which had been leaked. On the news there was the hilarious sight of a bunch of tits in dog collars, one of whom was Paisley, throwing snowballs at the car.

Kearley,

On the contrary, I'm an atheist with protestant heritage.

Paisley was responsible for a lot of the problems in N.Ireland in the 60/70/80s

Yes, he softened in the end. But by fuck did it take some time.

Wind the clock back to the 1960s and perhaps one can snigger at some of his antics, e.g. sending his then right-hand-man Major Ronald Bunting down to Dublin on the day of the Easter Uprising memorial service, to go into the cathedral and lay a wreath in tribute to the British soldiers killed that day.

But then again, it was more than just speaking on behalf of his constituents (something which yes, he did do) but moreover the stirring things up (which he also did, whilst claiming that he was reflecting the views of his "people") - e.g. the attacks on civil rights marchers.

And in terms of being blind to the implications of the shit he stirred up: even if in the blind rage of sectarian hatred, he was blind to what he perpetrated against the Catholics by reason of "temporary insanity" - just look at what happened to the aforementioned Major Bunting, or moreover his son - who having witnessed & suffered a beating at the hands of Paisley's mob, ended up taking what might very conservatively be called a somewhat atypical career choice for a middle-class Protestant boy from East Belfast. (i.e. becoming INLA's Chief of Staff)

So for all I read about Paisley having been such a "nice guy in the person, even if a bit aggressive politically" if he wasn't affected by what happened to someone for a longtime seen as his right hand man/ best friend/ chief lackey and that guy's son, then he really didn't have any sense of ordinary people. It was all about Paisley, Paisley and Paisley.

(Having said which I would have liked to have been a fly on the wall the first time Paisley and McGuinness were in the same room and had to start talking to one another, i.e. what got them on the road to such "chuckle brother" friendship)

I see a more obvious common denominator than religion.

Attila the Hun, Hitler and Stalin were all men of conviction.
They were also blood stained bastards.
The world is better off without them and Ian Paisley.

Some pretty deluded crazy quotes there, but from a man of the cloth it can unfortunately happen as they use religion to stoke fires within bellies.
Was he nice and cuddly I doubt that very much was he arrogant and confident and indeed lost with hate, well sought of yes.
But he did change slightly toward the end of his political life, even if it was only enough to wake up and work together with his enemies and that softened my dislike of him. I do understand how we can all be manipulated by our parents religion etc to hate the "other" and so i did not agree with anything paisley stood for but I did understand why he was the way he was.
